Don't verify write permissions on lower inodes on overlayfs #5
Conversation
If a user opens a file r/w on overlayfs, and if the underlying inode is currently still on the lower fs, right now we're verifying whether selinux policy permits writes to the selinux context on the underlying inode. This is suboptimal, since we don't want confined processes to be able to write to these files if they're able to escape from a container and so don't want to permit this in policy. Have overlayfs pass down an additional flag when verifying the permission on lower inodes, and mask off the write bits in the selinux permissions check if that flag is set.
lgtm, though it feels naughty to be punching holes in selinux and assuming overlayfs will do the right thing with writes going to the upper layer. Is there perhaps something simple we can do to assert this will always be the case to defend against overlayfs bugs? Perhaps beyond the scope of selinux, but thinking out loud here - it might be handy to have write operations detect if they're under overlayfs and always error. |
The semantics around how overlayfs should behave with SELinux aren't really terribly well figured out yet. We want a permissions check against the lower inode (at this point the upper inode doesn't exist), and at this point in the code we've pretty much handed off to the underlying filesystem and so there's very little awareness that we're coming from an overlay |

OMAP CPU hotplug uses cpu1's clocks and power domains for CPU1 wake up from low power states (or turn on CPU1). This part of code is also part of system suspend (disable_nonboot_cpus()). >From other side, cpu1's clocks and power domains are used by CPUIdle. All above functionality is mutually exclusive and, therefore, lockless clkdm/pwrdm api can be used in omap4_boot_secondary(). This fixes below back-trace on -RT which is triggered by pwrdm_lock/unlock(): BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at kernel/locking/rtmutex.c:917 in_atomic(): 1, irqs_disabled(): 0, pid: 118, name: sh 9 locks held by sh/118: #0: (sb_writers#4){.+.+.+}, at: [<c0144a6c>] vfs_write+0x13c/0x164 #1: (&of->mutex){+.+.+.}, at: [<c01b4c70>] kernfs_fop_write+0x48/0x19c #2: (s_active#24){.+.+.+}, at: [<c01b4c78>] kernfs_fop_write+0x50/0x19c #3: (device_hotplug_lock){+.+.+.}, at: [<c03cbff0>] lock_device_hotplug_sysfs+0xc/0x4c #4: (&dev->mutex){......}, at: [<c03cd284>] device_online+0x14/0x88 #5: (cpu_add_remove_lock){+.+.+.}, at: [<c003af90>] cpu_up+0x50/0x1a0 #6: (cpu_hotplug.lock){++++++}, at: [<c003ae48>] cpu_hotplug_begin+0x0/0xc4 #7: (cpu_hotplug.lock#2){+.+.+.}, at: [<c003aec0>] cpu_hotplug_begin+0x78/0xc4 #8: (boot_lock){+.+...}, at: [<c002b254>] omap4_boot_secondary+0x1c/0x178 Preemption disabled at:[< (null)>] (null) CPU: 0 PID: 118 Comm: sh Not tainted 4.1.12-rt11-01998-gb4a62c3-dirty #137 Hardware name: Generic DRA74X (Flattened Device Tree) [<c0017574>] (unwind_backtrace) from [<c0013be8>] (show_stack+0x10/0x14) [<c0013be8>] (show_stack) from [<c05a8670>] (dump_stack+0x80/0x94) [<c05a8670>] (dump_stack) from [<c05ad158>] (rt_spin_lock+0x24/0x54) [<c05ad158>] (rt_spin_lock) from [<c0030dac>] (clkdm_wakeup+0x10/0x2c) [<c0030dac>] (clkdm_wakeup) from [<c002b2c0>] (omap4_boot_secondary+0x88/0x178) [<c002b2c0>] (omap4_boot_secondary) from [<c0015d00>] (__cpu_up+0xc4/0x164) [<c0015d00>] (__cpu_up) from [<c003b09c>] (cpu_up+0x15c/0x1a0) [<c003b09c>] (cpu_up) from [<c03cd2d4>] (device_online+0x64/0x88) [<c03cd2d4>] (device_online) from [<c03cd360>] (online_store+0x68/0x74) [<c03cd360>] (online_store) from [<c01b4ce0>] (kernfs_fop_write+0xb8/0x19c) [<c01b4ce0>] (kernfs_fop_write) from [<c0144124>] (__vfs_write+0x20/0xd8) [<c0144124>] (__vfs_write) from [<c01449c0>] (vfs_write+0x90/0x164) [<c01449c0>] (vfs_write) from [<c01451e4>] (SyS_write+0x44/0x9c) [<c01451e4>] (SyS_write) from [<c0010240>] (ret_fast_syscall+0x0/0x54) CPU1: smp_ops.cpu_die() returned, trying to resuscitate Cc: Tero Kristo <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Grygorii Strashko <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Tony Lindgren <[email protected]>
When a43eec3 ("bpf: introduce bpf_perf_event_output() helper") added PERF_COUNT_SW_BPF_OUTPUT we ended up with a new entry in the event_symbols_sw array that wasn't initialized, thus set to NULL, fix print_symbol_events() to check for that case so that we don't crash if this happens again. commit d144dfe upstream. If we use USB ID pin as wakeup source, and there is a USB block device on this USB OTG (ID) cable, the system will be deadlock after system resume. The root cause for this problem is: the workqueue ci_otg may try to remove hcd before the driver resume has finished, and hcd will disconnect the device on it, then, it will call device_release_driver, and holds the device lock "dev->mutex", but it is never unlocked since it waits workqueue writeback to run to flush the block information, but the workqueue writeback is freezable, it is not thawed before driver resume has finished. When the driver (device: sd 0:0:0:0:) resume goes to dpm_complete, it tries to get its device lock "dev->mutex", but it can't get it forever, then the deadlock occurs. Below call stacks show the situation. So, in order to fix this problem, we need to change workqueue ci_otg as freezable, then the work item in this workqueue will be run after driver's resume, this workqueue will not be blocked forever like above case since the workqueue writeback has been thawed too. Tested at: i.mx6qdl-sabresd and i.mx6sx-sdb. …arm header commit a6002ec upstream. arm and arm64 use different config options to specify big endian. This needs taking into account when including code/headers between the two architectures. A case in point is PAN, which uses the __instr_arm() macro to output instructions. The macro comes from opcodes.h, which lives under arch/arm. On a big-endian build the mismatched config options mean the instruction isn't byte swapped correctly, resulting in undefined instruction exceptions during boot: | alternatives: patching kernel code | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc0004505b4 | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | kdevtmpfs[87]: undefined instruction: pc=ffffffc00076231c | Internal error: Oops - undefined instruction: 0 [#1] SMP | Modules linked in: | CPU: 0 PID: 87 Comm: kdevtmpfs Not tainted 4.1.16+ #5 | Hardware name: Hisilicon PhosphorHi1382 EVB (DT) | task: ffffffc336591700 ti: ffffffc3365a4000 task.ti: ffffffc3365a4000 | PC is at dump_instr+0x68/0x100 | LR is at do_undefinstr+0x1d4/0x2a4 | pc : [<ffffffc00076231c>] lr : [<ffffffc0000811d4>] pstate: 604001c5 | sp : ffffffc3365a6450 Reported-by: Hanjun Guo <[email protected]> Tested-by: Xuefeng Wang <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: James Morse <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Will Deacon <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <[email protected]>
commit c9eb13a upstream. If the orphaned inode list contains inode #5, ext4_iget() returns a bad inode (since the bootloader inode should never be referenced directly). Because of the bad inode, we end up processing the inode repeatedly and this hangs the machine. This can be reproduced via: mke2fs -t ext4 /tmp/foo.img 100 debugfs -w -R "ssv last_orphan 5" /tmp/foo.img mount -o loop /tmp/foo.img /mnt (But don't do this if you are using an unpatched kernel if you care about the system staying functional. :-) This bug was found by the port of American Fuzzy Lop into the kernel to find file system problems[1]. (Since it *only* happens if inode #5 shows up on the orphan list --- 3, 7, 8, etc. won't do it, it's not surprising that AFL needed two hours before it found it.) commit 4d486e0 upstream. Commit 0e6e01f ("CPM/QE: use genalloc to manage CPM/QE muram") has changed the way muram is managed. genalloc uses kmalloc(), hence requires the SLAB to be up and running. On powerpc 8xx, cpm_reset() is called early during startup. cpm_reset() then calls cpm_muram_init() before SLAB is available, hence the following Oops. cpm_reset() cannot be called during initcalls because the CPM is needed for console. This patch removes the call to cpm_muram_init() from cpm_reset(). cpm_muram_init() will be called from a new function called cpm_init() which is declared as subsys_initcall, unless cpm_muram_alloc() is called earlier for the serial console in which case cpm_muram_init() will be called from there. The reason for calling it from two places is that some drivers (e.g. i2c-cpm) need some of the initialisations done by cpm_muram_init() but don't call cpm_muram_alloc(). The console driver calls cpm_muram_alloc() but some platforms might not use the CPM serial ports for console. As a result, when a later user closed the device file before writing a valid set of descriptors, dev_release() thought the gadget had been registered and tried to unregister it, even though it had not been. This led to the NULL pointer dereference. The fix is simple: turn off the flag when the gadget is unregistered. This reverts commit c97e410, which incorrectly was taken from upstream c0a32fe. The referenced memory leak doesn't exist on the 4.14 stable branch as the new logic of doing the kzalloc hasn't moved to this function. By adding this kfree we actually end up doing double kfree as all callers of smi_add does a kfree on error. It was reported by Sergey Senozhatsky that if THP (Transparent Huge Page) and frontswap (via zswap) are both enabled, when memory goes low so that swap is triggered, segfault and memory corruption will occur in random user space applications as follow, kernel: urxvt[338]: segfault at 20 ip 00007fc08889ae0d sp 00007ffc73a7fc40 error 6 in libc-2.26.so[7fc08881a000+1ae000] #0 0x00007fc08889ae0d _int_malloc (libc.so.6) #1 0x00007fc08889c2f3 malloc (libc.so.6) #2 0x0000560e6004bff7 _Z14rxvt_wcstoutf8PKwi (urxvt) #3 0x0000560e6005e75c n/a (urxvt) #4 0x0000560e6007d9f1 _ZN16rxvt_perl_interp6invokeEP9rxvt_term9hook_typez (urxvt) #5 0x0000560e6003d988 _ZN9rxvt_term9cmd_parseEv (urxvt) #6 0x0000560e60042804 _ZN9rxvt_term6pty_cbERN2ev2ioEi (urxvt) #7 0x0000560e6005c10f _Z17ev_invoke_pendingv (urxvt) #8 0x0000560e6005cb55 ev_run (urxvt) #9 0x0000560e6003b9b9 main (urxvt) #10 0x00007fc08883af4a __libc_start_main (libc.so.6) #11 0x0000560e6003f9da _start (urxvt) After bisection, it was found the first bad commit is bd4c82c ("mm, THP, swap: delay splitting THP after swapped out"). The root cause is as follows: When the pages are written to swap device during swapping out in swap_writepage(), zswap (fontswap) is tried to compress the pages to improve performance. But zswap (frontswap) will treat THP as a normal page, so only the head page is saved. After swapping in, tail pages will not be restored to their original contents, causing memory corruption in the applications. This is fixed by refusing to save page in the frontswap store functions if the page is a THP. So that the THP will be swapped out to swap device. Another choice is to split THP if frontswap is enabled. But it is found that the frontswap enabling isn't flexible. For example, if CONFIG_ZSWAP=y (cannot be module), frontswap will be enabled even if zswap itself isn't enabled. Frontswap has multiple backends, to make it easy for one backend to enable THP support, the THP checking is put in backend frontswap store functions instead of the general interfaces. [ Upstream commit d754941 ] If, for any reason, userland shuts down iscsi transport interfaces before proper logouts - like when logging in to LUNs manually, without logging out on server shutdown, or when automated scripts can't umount/logout from logged LUNs - kernel will hang forever on its sd_sync_cache() logic, after issuing the SYNCHRONIZE_CACHE cmd to all still existent paths. PID: 1 TASK: ffff8801a69b8000 CPU: 1 COMMAND: "systemd-shutdow" #0 [ffff8801a69c3a30] __schedule at ffffffff8183e9ee #1 [ffff8801a69c3a80] schedule at ffffffff8183f0d5 #2 [ffff8801a69c3a98] schedule_timeout at ffffffff81842199 #3 [ffff8801a69c3b40] io_schedule_timeout at ffffffff8183e604 #4 [ffff8801a69c3b70] wait_for_completion_io_timeout at ffffffff8183fc6c #5 [ffff8801a69c3bd0] blk_execute_rq at ffffffff813cfe10 #6 [ffff8801a69c3c88] scsi_execute at ffffffff815c3fc7 #7 [ffff8801a69c3cc8] scsi_execute_req_flags at ffffffff815c60fe #8 [ffff8801a69c3d30] sd_sync_cache at ffffffff815d37d7 #9 [ffff8801a69c3da8] sd_shutdown at ffffffff815d3c3c This happens because iscsi_eh_cmd_timed_out(), the transport layer timeout helper, would tell the queue timeout function (scsi_times_out) to reset the request timer over and over, until the session state is back to logged in state. Unfortunately, during server shutdown, this might never happen again. Other option would be "not to handle" the issue in the transport layer. That would trigger the error handler logic, which would also need the session state to be logged in again. Best option, for such case, is to tell upper layers that the command was handled during the transport layer error handler helper, marking it as DID_NO_CONNECT, which will allow completion and inform about the problem. After the session was marked as ISCSI_STATE_FAILED, due to the first timeout during the server shutdown phase, all subsequent cmds will fail to be queued, allowing upper logic to fail faster. commit b23220f upstream. The balloon.page field is used for two different purposes if batching is on or off. If batching is on, the field point to the page which is used to communicate with with the hypervisor. If it is off, balloon.page points to the page that is about to be (un)locked. Unfortunately, this dual-purpose of the field introduced a bug: when the balloon is popped (e.g., when the machine is reset or the balloon driver is explicitly removed), the balloon driver frees, unconditionally, the page that is held in balloon.page. commit b23220f upstream. As a result, if batching is disabled, this leads to double freeing the last page that is sent to the hypervisor. [ Upstream commit ebaf39e ] The *_frag_reasm() functions are susceptible to miscalculating the byte count of packet fragments in case the truesize of a head buffer changes. The truesize member may be changed by the call to skb_unclone(), leaving the fragment memory limit counter unbalanced even if all fragments are processed. This miscalculation goes unnoticed as long as the network namespace which holds the counter is not destroyed. Should an attempt be made to destroy a network namespace that holds an unbalanced fragment memory limit counter the cleanup of the namespace never finishes. The thread handling the cleanup gets stuck in inet_frags_exit_net() waiting for the percpu counter to reach zero. The thread is usually in running state with a stacktrace similar to: PID: 1073 TASK: ffff880626711440 CPU: 1 COMMAND: "kworker/u48:4" #5 [ffff880621563d48] _raw_spin_lock at ffffffff815f5480 #6 [ffff880621563d48] inet_evict_bucket at ffffffff8158020b #7 [ffff880621563d80] inet_frags_exit_net at ffffffff8158051c #8 [ffff880621563db0] ops_exit_list at ffffffff814f5856 #9 [ffff880621563dd8] cleanup_net at ffffffff814f67c0 #10 [ffff880621563e38] process_one_work at ffffffff81096f14 It is not possible to create new network namespaces, and processes that call unshare() end up being stuck in uninterruptible sleep state waiting to acquire the net_mutex. [ Upstream commit c5a94f4 ] It was observed that a process blocked indefintely in __fscache_read_or_alloc_page(), waiting for FSCACHE_COOKIE_LOOKING_UP to be cleared via fscache_wait_for_deferred_lookup(). At this time, ->backing_objects was empty, which would normaly prevent __fscache_read_or_alloc_page() from getting to the point of waiting. This implies that ->backing_objects was cleared *after* __fscache_read_or_alloc_page was was entered. When an object is "killed" and then "dropped", FSCACHE_COOKIE_LOOKING_UP is cleared in fscache_lookup_failure(), then KILL_OBJECT and DROP_OBJECT are "called" and only in DROP_OBJECT is ->backing_objects cleared. This leaves a window where something else can set FSCACHE_COOKIE_LOOKING_UP and __fscache_read_or_alloc_page() can start waiting, before ->backing_objects is cleared There is some uncertainty in this analysis, but it seems to be fit the observations. Adding the wake in this patch will be handled correctly by __fscache_read_or_alloc_page(), as it checks if ->backing_objects is empty again, after waiting. Customer which reported the hang, also report that the hang cannot be reproduced with this fix. [ Upstream commit f80c5da ] This commit makes the kernel not send the next queued HCI command until a command complete arrives for the last HCI command sent to the controller. This change avoids a problem with some buggy controllers (seen on two SKUs of QCA9377) that send an extra command complete event for the previous command after the kernel had already sent a new HCI command to the controller. The problem was reproduced when starting an active scanning procedure, where an extra command complete event arrives for the LE_SET_RANDOM_ADDR command. When this happends the kernel ends up not processing the command complete for the following commmand, LE_SET_SCAN_PARAM, and ultimately behaving as if a passive scanning procedure was being performed, when in fact controller is performing an active scanning procedure. This makes it impossible to discover BLE devices as no device found events are sent to userspace. This problem is reproducible on 100% of the attempts on the affected controllers. The extra command complete event can be seen at timestamp 27.420131 on the btmon logs bellow. commit 3f93a4f upstream. It is possible for an irq triggered by channel0 to be received later after clks are disabled once firmware loaded during sdma probe. If that happens then clearing them by writing to SDMA_H_INTR won't work and the kernel will hang processing infinite interrupts. Actually, don't need interrupt triggered on channel0 since it's pollling SDMA_H_STATSTOP to know channel0 done rather than interrupt in current code, just clear BD_INTR to disable channel0 interrupt to avoid the above case. This issue was brought by commit 1d069bf ("dmaengine: imx-sdma: ack channel 0 IRQ in the interrupt handler") which didn't take care the above case. commit 7545b6c upstream. Clear the CRYPTO_TFM_REQ_MAY_SLEEP flag when the chacha20poly1305 operation is being continued from an async completion callback, since sleeping may not be allowed in that context. This is basically the same bug that was recently fixed in the xts and lrw templates. But, it's always been broken in chacha20poly1305 too. This was found using syzkaller in combination with the updated crypto self-tests which actually test the MAY_SLEEP flag now. commit cf3591e upstream. Revert the commit bd293d0. The proper fix has been made available with commit d0a255e ("loop: set PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO for the worker thread"). Note that the fix offered by commit bd293d0 doesn't really prevent the deadlock from occuring - if we look at the stacktrace reported by Junxiao Bi, we see that it hangs in bit_wait_io and not on the mutex - i.e. it has already successfully taken the mutex. Changing the mutex from mutex_lock to mutex_trylock won't help with deadlocks that happen afterwards. commit 443f2d5 upstream. Observe a segmentation fault when 'perf stat' is asked to repeat forever with the interval option. [ Upstream commit 5eed6f1 ] Commit 9b6f7e1 ("mm: rework memcg kernel stack accounting") will result in fork failing if allocating a kernel stack for a task in dup_task_struct exceeds the kernel memory allowance for that cgroup. Unfortunately, it also results in a crash. This is due to the code jumping to free_stack and calling free_thread_stack when the memcg kernel stack charge fails, but without tsk->stack pointing at the freshly allocated stack. This in turn results in the vfree_atomic in free_thread_stack oopsing with a backtrace like this: #5 [ffffc900244efc88] die at ffffffff8101f0ab #6 [ffffc900244efcb8] do_general_protection at ffffffff8101cb86 #7 [ffffc900244efce0] general_protection at ffffffff818ff082 [exception RIP: llist_add_batch+7] RIP: ffffffff8150d487 RSP: ffffc900244efd98 RFLAGS: 00010282 RAX: 0000000000000000 RBX: ffff88085ef55980 RCX: 0000000000000000 RDX: ffff88085ef55980 RSI: 343834343531203a RDI: 343834343531203a RBP: ffffc900244efd98 R8: 0000000000000001 R9: ffff8808578c3600 R10: 0000000000000000 R11: 0000000000000001 R12: ffff88029f6c21c0 R13: 0000000000000286 R14: ffff880147759b00 R15: 0000000000000000 ORIG_RAX: ffffffffffffffff CS: 0010 SS: 0018 #8 [ffffc900244efda0] vfree_atomic at ffffffff811df2c7 #9 [ffffc900244efdb8] copy_process at ffffffff81086e37 #10 [ffffc900244efe98] _do_fork at ffffffff810884e0 #11 [ffffc900244eff10] sys_vfork at ffffffff810887ff #12 [ffffc900244eff20] do_syscall_64 at ffffffff81002a43 RIP: 000000000049b948 RSP: 00007ffcdb307830 RFLAGS: 00000246 RAX: ffffffffffffffda RBX: 0000000000896030 RCX: 000000000049b948 RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: 00007ffcdb307790 RDI: 00000000005d7421 RBP: 000000000067370f R8: 00007ffcdb3077b0 R9: 000000000001ed00 R10: 0000000000000008 R11: 0000000000000246 R12: 0000000000000040 R13: 000000000000000f R14: 0000000000000000 R15: 000000000088d018 ORIG_RAX: 000000000000003a CS: 0033 SS: 002b The simplest fix is to assign tsk->stack right where it is allocated. [ Upstream commit 96bf313ecb33567af4cb53928b0c951254a02759 ] There exists a deadlock with range_cyclic that has existed forever. If we loop around with a bio already built we could deadlock with a writer who has the page locked that we're attempting to write but is waiting on a page in our bio to be written out. Using drgn I walked the bio pages looking for page 0xffffea00fbfc7500 which is the one we're waiting for writeback on bio = Object(prog, 'struct bio', address=0xffff889f747ed830) for i in range(0, bio.bi_vcnt.value_()): bv = bio.bi_io_vec[i] if bv.bv_page.value_() == 0xffffea00fbfc7500: print("FOUND IT") which validated what I suspected. The fix for this is simple, flush the epd before we loop back around to the beginning of the file during writeout. For now though, let's just revert. If a user opens a file r/w on overlayfs, and if the underlying inode is
currently still on the lower fs, right now we're verifying whether selinux
policy permits writes to the selinux context on the underlying inode. This
is suboptimal, since we don't want confined processes to be able to write to
these files if they're able to escape from a container and so don't want to
permit this in policy. Have overlayfs pass down an additional flag when
verifying the permission on lower inodes, and mask off the write bits in
the selinux permissions check if that flag is set.
