Question: alternative hashing/error correction #6
Comments
Hash collisions aren't really an issue for when you're using a checksum as an integrity check, which is what we're using crc32c for. Or do you have some more specific concern...? It might be worthwhile adding another option for architectures where crc32c is slow, but I don't know if that's actually an issue because crc32c is used pretty widely these days and tends to be quite well optimized. |
Are they? We have a concern about silent data corruption or post-replication checks. Yes, the probability is several magnitudes lower than without any checks, but modern algorithms make it even lower (especially if 64 bits hashsums are used instead of 32). If bcachefs is a "do as good as we can" effort, why a compromise? And yes, the second reason is speed. Here's a simple and very illustrative test, you will need only a KVM/QEMU VM with a cpu set as "generic" (recommended for VM smooth migration), any distro, and a fio v3 and later:
We are using something even faster than XXhash, a t1ha. So far so good. |
On a second thought, I should probably explain what the above numbers are saying to me... Afaik, crc32c is not that much optimized. It's CPUs, that have a specific instruction for it's calculation, that make it reasonably fast. But not all of them. Low end CPUs, or not-so-server CPUs might not have needed instruction set. And even when it is in place, crc32c not beyond competition:
That's Intel Scalable, probably the newest arch on the market. I am not a coder myself, so, I might be incorrect in this, but that's what it seems from Scrum-PO point of view. |

So, if the reason is you want something _stronger_ than crc32c - you need to be
aware that checksums for detecting data corruption have a different goal than
hashes which are trying to avoid collisions - CRCs (like crc32c) provide strong
mathematical guarantees that they will detect the kinds of random data
corruptions that are likely to occur in practice. Hash functions like
xxhash/murmur3/jhash aren't designed that way, they're meant to be good _on
average_ at avoiding collisions between unrelated data.
So I would be _really_ uncomfortable with adding something like xxhash without a
paper or some kind of other serious mathematical analysis justifying it for that
purpose.
And we do already have a 64 bit CRC, the current implementation is really
slow but postgresql has a newer much faster implementation that we can pull in
(that's where that CRC originally came from).
If you still want something stronger, or you want something stronger than crc32c
but fast, there's also poly1305 which is a cryptographic MAC, and the kernel
implementation is fast - I just tested it and it's 3474 MB/sec for me, running
inside a VM on a Haswell.
And yes, the second reason is speed. Here's a simple and very illustrative

You really don't want to run with your cpu set to generic, you lose out on any
new instructions from the past, what, 20 years. Just figure out what your common
denominator supported instruction set is.
… `fio --crctest

sha3-256: 37.83 MiB/sec

We are using something even faster than XXhash, a [t1ha](https://github.com/leo-yuriev/t1ha). So far so good.

Ok, so maybe I am missing something. I understand hash algorithms as a very
simple tools - you flip one bit in "input" dataset, some great change
occurs in "output" dataset (that is checked by avalanche test). Than
there's collisions - two different inputs should make two different outputs
(collision tests). Than there comes crypto stuff: "watermark criteria" etc.
(distribution tests).
Are you saying that smhasher test is not relevant to data corruption? I am
under the impression, that it verifies not only collision probability, but
also data modification (avalanche test). And it shows that crc32 is more
prone to errors than modern algorithms (in said smhasher avalanche tests,
[registered in smhasher suite](https://github.com/rurban/smhasher/blob/master/doc/crc32_hw), and I have
found [this paper](https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Carsten_Schmoll/publication/220194975_Empirical_evaluation_of_hash_functions_for_multipoint_measurements/links/0fcfd50926bc711161000000.pdf)
).
I can agree, that the decision of switching default to alternative to crc32
should be made after some investigation. But crc32 has 2 downsides:
possibility of errors shown by widely used hash algorithm quality check
tool and low speeds without specific hardware instructions included in CPU.
Does that justify addition of an option to use someting else?
You really don't want to run with your cpu set to generic, you lose out on any
new instructions from the past, what, 20 years. Just figure out what your common
denominator supported instruction set is.
Well... I think that hardware accelerated instruction set is evil. Look at
a giant pile of mess Intel has introduced with speculative execution. Any
shortcut can be found faulty one day. Ok, we use them, just it's better not
to depend on solely on them. But that's just an opinion. Strictly speaking
common denominator should be GCC (or clang). If it can be compiled, it
should run decently. Why on earth armV7 should be excluded from suitable
platforms for bcachefs application? Or MIPS? Or any other?
Say we have a home NAS. Will it has to be x86 to run bcachefs decently?
(cool article https://aras-p.info/blog/2016/08/02/Hash-Functions-all-the-way-down/, seen also an interesting thread in android chrome maillist, but can't find it now)
So I would be _really_ uncomfortable with adding something like xxhash without a
paper or some kind of other serious mathematical analysis justifying it for that
purpose.
Umm... I guess I'll ask their authors if they have contemplated their hash
algorithms usage for error detection. I'll post replies here.
(interesting references in this article https://arxiv.org/pdf/1609.09840.pdf - Of course, there are many more fast hash functions (e.g., xxHash, CityHash [37, 38],
SpookyHash [39], FarmHash [40], CLHASH [41] and tabulation-based or Zobrist hashing [20,
21, 22]). For a recent review of non-cryptographic hash functions, we refer the interested reader to
Ahmad and Younis [42], Estébanez et al. [43] or Thorup [44]. We leave a more detailed comparison
to future work.)
So, I beleive we should have an alternative that is not CPU-arch dependent,
less error prone according to tests and not much slower than the crc32c. All
that can be shortened to "maybe, user should have a choice".
I am really interested in the project, that's why I am not satisfied with
crc32c. Said poly1305 - is a great example that someone might have
different criteria than me. If it is designed for cryptographic application
it has to pass watermark criteria - distribution of output should be
unaffected by input data characteristics. Maybe it will be default for
encrypted fs. But it's 50% from crc32 when evaluating speed - so, it is
not-so-generic. That's why I'm more interested in algorithms with
comparable speed.
And hey! BcacheFS is cool! Keep up good work, I hope we will have resources
to participate in it's development soon... So far it's just anecdotal
experience - crc32 is a pain in embedded systems.

Revert the commit bd293d0. The proper fix has been made available with commit d0a255e ("loop: set PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO for the worker thread"). Note that the fix offered by commit bd293d0 doesn't really prevent the deadlock from occuring - if we look at the stacktrace reported by Junxiao Bi, we see that it hangs in bit_wait_io and not on the mutex - i.e. it has already successfully taken the mutex. Changing the mutex from mutex_lock to mutex_trylock won't help with deadlocks that happen afterwards. commit cf3591e upstream. Commit 9130b8d ("SUNRPC: allow for upcalls for the same uid but different gss service") introduced `auth` argument to __gss_find_upcall(), but in gss_pipe_downcall() it was left as NULL since it (and auth->service) was not (yet) determined. When multiple upcalls with the same uid and different service are ongoing, it could happen that __gss_find_upcall(), which returns the first match found in the pipe->in_downcall list, could not find the correct gss_msg corresponding to the downcall we are looking for. Moreover, it might return a msg which is not sent to rpc.gssd yet. We could see mount.nfs process hung in D state with multiple mount.nfs are executed in parallel. The call trace below is of CentOS 7.9 kernel-3.10.0-1160.24.1.el7.x86_64 but we observed the same hang w/ elrepo kernel-ml-6.0.7-1.el7. Let's say there are two upcalls for services A and B, A -> B in pipe->in_downcall, B -> A in pipe->pipe. When rpc.gssd reads pipe to get the upcall msg corresponding to service B from pipe->pipe and then writes the response, in gss_pipe_downcall the msg corresponding to service A will be picked because only uid is used to find the msg and it is before the one for B in pipe->in_downcall. And the process waiting for the msg corresponding to service A will be woken up. Actual scheduing of that process might be after rpc.gssd processes the next msg. In rpc_pipe_generic_upcall it clears msg->errno (for A). The process is scheduled to see gss_msg->ctx == NULL and gss_msg->msg.errno == 0, therefore it cannot break the loop in gss_create_upcall and is never woken up after that. This patch adds a simple check to ensure that a msg which is not sent to rpc.gssd yet is not chosen as the matching upcall upon receiving a downcall. In Google internal bug 265639009 we've received an (as yet) unreproducible crash report from an aarch64 GKI 5.10.149-android13 running device. AFAICT the source code is at: https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/common/+/refs/tags/ASB-2022-12-05_13-5.10 The call stack is: ncm_close() -> ncm_notify() -> ncm_do_notify() with the crash at: ncm_do_notify+0x98/0x270 Code: 79000d0b b9000a6c f940012a f9400269 (b9405d4b) Which I believe disassembles to (I don't know ARM assembly, but it looks sane enough to me...): // halfword (16-bit) store presumably to event->wLength (at offset 6 of struct usb_cdc_notification) 0B 0D 00 79 strh w11, [x8, #6] // word (32-bit) store presumably to req->Length (at offset 8 of struct usb_request) 6C 0A 00 B9 str w12, [x19, #8] // x10 (NULL) was read here from offset 0 of valid pointer x9 // IMHO we're reading 'cdev->gadget' and getting NULL // gadget is indeed at offset 0 of struct usb_composite_dev 2A 01 40 F9 ldr x10, [x9] // loading req->buf pointer, which is at offset 0 of struct usb_request 69 02 40 F9 ldr x9, [x19] // x10 is null, crash, appears to be attempt to read cdev->gadget->max_speed 4B 5D 40 B9 ldr w11, [x10, #0x5c] which seems to line up with ncm_do_notify() case NCM_NOTIFY_SPEED code fragment: event->wLength = cpu_to_le16(8); req->length = NCM_STATUS_BYTECOUNT; /* SPEED_CHANGE data is up/down speeds in bits/sec */ data = req->buf + sizeof *event; data[0] = cpu_to_le32(ncm_bitrate(cdev->gadget)); My analysis of registers and NULL ptr deref crash offset (Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 000000000000005c) heavily suggests that the crash is due to 'cdev->gadget' being NULL when executing: data[0] = cpu_to_le32(ncm_bitrate(cdev->gadget)); which calls: ncm_bitrate(NULL) which then calls: gadget_is_superspeed(NULL) which reads ((struct usb_gadget *)NULL)->max_speed and hits a panic. AFAICT, if I'm counting right, the offset of max_speed is indeed 0x5C. (remember there's a GKI KABI reservation of 16 bytes in struct work_struct) It's not at all clear to me how this is all supposed to work... but returning 0 seems much better than panic-ing... Since the driver registration doesn't check for it and allows it to be registered without .remove callback, we need to check for the presence of it before executing it from ffa_device_remove() to above a NULL pointer dereference like the one below: | Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000000 | Mem abort info: | ESR = 0x0000000086000004 | EC = 0x21: IABT (current EL), IL = 32 bits | SET = 0, FnV = 0 | EA = 0, S1PTW = 0 | FSC = 0x04: level 0 translation fault | user pgtable: 4k pages, 48-bit VAs, pgdp=0000000881cc8000 | [0000000000000000] pgd=0000000000000000, p4d=0000000000000000 | Internal error: Oops: 0000000086000004 [#1] PREEMPT SMP | CPU: 3 PID: 130 Comm: rmmod Not tainted 6.3.0-rc7 #6 | Hardware name: FVP Base RevC (DT) | pstate: 63402809 (nZCv daif +PAN -UAO +TCO +DIT -SSBS BTYPE=-c) | pc : 0x0 | lr : ffa_device_remove+0x20/0x2c | Call trace: | 0x0 | device_release_driver_internal+0x16c/0x260 | driver_detach+0x90/0xd0 | bus_remove_driver+0xdc/0x11c | driver_unregister+0x30/0x54 | ffa_driver_unregister+0x14/0x20 | cleanup_module+0x18/0xeec | __arm64_sys_delete_module+0x234/0x378 | invoke_syscall+0x40/0x108 | el0_svc_common+0xb4/0xf0 | do_el0_svc+0x30/0xa4 | el0_svc+0x2c/0x7c | el0t_64_sync_handler+0x84/0xf0 | el0t_64_sync+0x190/0x194 Fixes: 244f5d5 ("firmware: arm_ffa: Add missing remove callback to ffa_bus_type") Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/[email protected] Signed-off-by: Sudeep Holla <[email protected]>
In the function ieee80211_tx_dequeue() there is a particular locking sequence: begin: spin_lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); q_stopped = local->queue_stop_reasons[q]; spin_unlock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); However small the chance (increased by ftracetest), an asynchronous interrupt can occur in between of spin_lock() and spin_unlock(), and the interrupt routine will attempt to lock the same &local->queue_stop_reason_lock again. This will cause a costly reset of the CPU and the wifi device or an altogether hang in the single CPU and single core scenario. The only remaining spin_lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock) that did not disable interrupts was patched, which should prevent any deadlocks on the same CPU/core and the same wifi device. If neigh update is running at this time, the following encaps of the flow can't hold the encap_tbl_lock and sleep. If neigh update thread is waiting for that flow's init_done, deadlock happens. Fix it by holding lock outside of the for loop. If neigh update is running, prevent encap flows from offloading. Since the lock is held outside of the for loop, concurrent creation of encap entries is not allowed. So remove unnecessary wait_for_completion call for res_ready. …f-times' Eduard Zingerman says: ==================== verify callbacks as if they are called unknown number of times This series updates verifier logic for callback functions handling. Current master simulates callback body execution exactly once, which leads to verifier not detecting unsafe programs like below: static int unsafe_on_zero_iter_cb(__u32 idx, struct num_context *ctx) { ctx->i = 0; return 0; } SEC("?raw_tp") int unsafe_on_zero_iter(void *unused) { struct num_context loop_ctx = { .i = 32 }; __u8 choice_arr[2] = { 0, 1 }; bpf_loop(100, unsafe_on_zero_iter_cb, &loop_ctx, 0); return choice_arr[loop_ctx.i]; } This was reported previously in [0]. The basic idea of the fix is to schedule callback entry state for verification in env->head until some identical, previously visited state in current DFS state traversal is found. Same logic as with open coded iterators, and builds on top recent fixes [1] for those. The series is structured as follows: - patches #1,2,3 update strobemeta, xdp_synproxy selftests and bpf_loop_bench benchmark to allow convergence of the bpf_loop callback states; - patches #4,5 just shuffle the code a bit; - patch #6 is the main part of the series; - patch #7 adds test cases for #6; - patch #8 extend patch #6 with same speculative scalar widening logic, as used for open coded iterators; - patch #9 adds test cases for #8; - patch #10 extends patch #6 to track maximal number of callback executions specifically for bpf_loop(); - patch #11 adds test cases for #10. Veristat results comparing this series to master+patches #1,2,3 using selftests show the following difference: File Program States (A) States (B) States (DIFF) ------------------------- ------------- ---------- ---------- ------------- bpf_loop_bench.bpf.o benchmark 1 2 +1 (+100.00%) pyperf600_bpf_loop.bpf.o on_event 322 407 +85 (+26.40%) strobemeta_bpf_loop.bpf.o on_event 113 151 +38 (+33.63%) xdp_synproxy_kern.bpf.o syncookie_tc 341 291 -50 (-14.66%) xdp_synproxy_kern.bpf.o syncookie_xdp 344 301 -43 (-12.50%) Veristat results comparing this series to master using Tetragon BPF files [2] also show some differences. States diff varies from +2% to +15% on 23 programs out of 186, no new failures. Changelog: - V3 [5] -> V4, changes suggested by Andrii: - validate mark_chain_precision() result in patch #10; - renaming s/cumulative_callback_depth/callback_unroll_depth/. - V2 [4] -> V3: - fixes in expected log messages for test cases: - callback_result_precise; - parent_callee_saved_reg_precise_with_callback; - parent_stack_slot_precise_with_callback; - renamings (suggested by Alexei): - s/callback_iter_depth/cumulative_callback_depth/ - s/is_callback_iter_next/calls_callback/ - s/mark_callback_iter_next/mark_calls_callback/ - prepare_func_exit() updated to exit with -EFAULT when callee->in_callback_fn is true but calls_callback() is not true for callsite; - test case 'bpf_loop_iter_limit_nested' rewritten to use return value check instead of verifier log message checks (suggested by Alexei). - V1 [3] -> V2, changes suggested by Andrii: - small changes for error handling code in __check_func_call(); - callback body processing log is now matched in relevant verifier_subprog_precision.c tests; - R1 passed to bpf_loop() is now always marked as precise; - log level 2 message for bpf_loop() iteration termination instead of iteration depth messages; - __no_msg macro removed; - bpf_loop_iter_limit_nested updated to avoid using __no_msg; - commit message for patch #3 updated according to Alexei's request. This is the state of the log tree at the time of the crash, dumped with drgn (https://github.com/osandov/drgn/blob/main/contrib/btrfs_tree.py) to get more details than btrfs_print_leaf() gives us: >>> print_extent_buffer(prog.crashed_thread().stack_trace()[0]["eb"]) leaf 33439744 level 0 items 72 generation 9 owner 18446744073709551610 leaf 33439744 flags 0x100000000000000 fs uuid e5bd3946-400c-4223-8923-190ef1f18677 chunk uuid d58cb17e-6d02-494a-829a-18b7d8a399da item 0 key (450 INODE_ITEM 0) itemoff 16123 itemsize 160 generation 7 transid 9 size 8192 nbytes 8473563889606862198 block group 0 mode 100600 links 1 uid 0 gid 0 rdev 0 sequence 204 flags 0x10(PREALLOC) atime 1716417703.220000000 (2024-05-22 15:41:43) ctime 1716417704.983333333 (2024-05-22 15:41:44) mtime 1716417704.983333333 (2024-05-22 15:41:44) otime 17592186044416.000000000 (559444-03-08 01:40:16) item 1 key (450 INODE_REF 256) itemoff 16110 itemsize 13 index 195 namelen 3 name: 193 item 2 key (450 XATTR_ITEM 1640047104) itemoff 16073 itemsize 37 location key (0 UNKNOWN.0 0) type XATTR transid 7 data_len 1 name_len 6 name: user.a data a item 3 key (450 EXTENT_DATA 0) itemoff 16020 itemsize 53 generation 9 type 1 (regular) extent data disk byte 303144960 nr 12288 extent data offset 0 nr 4096 ram 12288 extent compression 0 (none) item 4 key (450 EXTENT_DATA 4096) itemoff 15967 itemsize 53 generation 9 type 2 (prealloc) prealloc data disk byte 303144960 nr 12288 prealloc data offset 4096 nr 8192 item 5 key (450 EXTENT_DATA 8192) itemoff 15914 itemsize 53 generation 9 type 2 (prealloc) prealloc data disk byte 303144960 nr 12288 prealloc data offset 8192 nr 4096 ... Furthermore, item 183 is the last item in the leaf. btrfs_log_prealloc_extents() is responsible for logging prealloc extents beyond i_size. It first truncates any previously logged prealloc extents that start beyond i_size. Then, it walks the filesystem tree and copies the prealloc extent items to the log tree. If it hits the end of a leaf, then it calls btrfs_next_leaf(), which unlocks the tree and does another search. However, while the filesystem tree is unlocked, an ordered extent completion may modify the tree. In particular, it may insert an extent item that overlaps with an extent item that was already copied to the log tree. This may manifest in several ways depending on the exact scenario, including an EEXIST error that is silently translated to a full sync, overlapping items in the log tree, or this crash. This particular crash is triggered by the following sequence of events: - Initially, the file has i_size=4k, a regular extent from 0-4k, and a prealloc extent beyond i_size from 4k-12k. The prealloc extent item is the last item in its B-tree leaf. - The file is fsync'd, which copies its inode item and both extent items to the log tree. - An xattr is set on the file, which sets the BTRFS_INODE_COPY_EVERYTHING flag. - The range 4k-8k in the file is written using direct I/O. i_size is extended to 8k, but the ordered extent is still in flight. - The file is fsync'd. Since BTRFS_INODE_COPY_EVERYTHING is set, this calls copy_inode_items_to_log(), which calls btrfs_log_prealloc_extents(). - btrfs_log_prealloc_extents() finds the 4k-12k prealloc extent in the filesystem tree. Since it starts before i_size, it skips it. Since it is the last item in its B-tree leaf, it calls btrfs_next_leaf(). - btrfs_next_leaf() unlocks the path. - The ordered extent completion runs, which converts the 4k-8k part of the prealloc extent to written and inserts the remaining prealloc part from 8k-12k. - btrfs_next_leaf() does a search and finds the new prealloc extent 8k-12k. - btrfs_log_prealloc_extents() copies the 8k-12k prealloc extent into the log tree. Note that it overlaps with the 4k-12k prealloc extent that was copied to the log tree by the first fsync. - fsync calls btrfs_log_changed_extents(), which tries to log the 4k-8k extent that was written. - This tries to drop the range 4k-8k in the log tree, which requires adjusting the start of the 4k-12k prealloc extent in the log tree to 8k. - btrfs_set_item_key_safe() sees that there is already an extent starting at 8k in the log tree and calls BUG(). Fix this by detecting when we're about to insert an overlapping file extent item in the log tree and truncating the part that would overlap. …play During inode logging (and log replay too), we are holding a transaction handle and we often need to call btrfs_iget(), which will read an inode from its subvolume btree if it's not loaded in memory and that results in allocating an inode with GFP_KERNEL semantics at the btrfs_alloc_inode() callback - and this may recurse into the filesystem in case we are under memory pressure and attempt to commit the current transaction, resulting in a deadlock since the logging (or log replay) task is holding a transaction handle open. The code in ocfs2_dio_end_io_write() estimates number of necessary transaction credits using ocfs2_calc_extend_credits(). This however does not take into account that the IO could be arbitrarily large and can contain arbitrary number of extents. Extent tree manipulations do often extend the current transaction but not in all of the cases. For example if we have only single block extents in the tree, ocfs2_mark_extent_written() will end up calling ocfs2_replace_extent_rec() all the time and we will never extend the current transaction and eventually exhaust all the transaction credits if the IO contains many single block extents. Once that happens a WARN_ON(jbd2_handle_buffer_credits(handle) <= 0) is triggered in jbd2_journal_dirty_metadata() and subsequently OCFS2 aborts in response to this error. This was actually triggered by one of our customers on a heavily fragmented OCFS2 filesystem. To fix the issue make sure the transaction always has enough credits for one extent insert before each call of ocfs2_mark_extent_written(). A kernel warning was reported when pinning folio in CMA memory when launching SEV virtual machine. But the page is in CMA area, so fast GUP will fail then fallback to the slow path due to the longterm pinnalbe check in try_grab_folio(). The slow path will try to pin the pages then migrate them out of CMA area. But the slow path also uses try_grab_folio() to pin the page, it will also fail due to the same check then the above warning is triggered. In addition, the try_grab_folio() is supposed to be used in fast path and it elevates folio refcount by using add ref unless zero. We are guaranteed to have at least one stable reference in slow path, so the simple atomic add could be used. The performance difference should be trivial, but the misuse may be confusing and misleading. Redefined try_grab_folio() to try_grab_folio_fast(), and try_grab_page() to try_grab_folio(), and use them in the proper paths. This solves both the abuse and the kernel warning. The proper naming makes their usecase more clear and should prevent from abusing in the future. peterx said: : The user will see the pin fails, for gpu-slow it further triggers the WARN : right below that failure (as in the original report): : : folio = try_grab_folio(page, page_increm - 1, : foll_flags); : if (WARN_ON_ONCE(!folio)) { <------------------------ here : /* : * Release the 1st page ref if the : * folio is problematic, fail hard. : */ : gup_put_folio(page_folio(page), 1, : foll_flags); : ret = -EFAULT; : goto out; : } [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/[email protected]/ [[email protected]: fix implicit declaration of function try_grab_folio_fast] Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/CAHbLzkowMSso-4Nufc9hcMehQsK9PNz3OSu-+eniU-2Mm-xjhA@mail.gmail.com Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/[email protected] Fixes: 57edfcf ("mm/gup: accelerate thp gup even for "pages != NULL"") Signed-off-by: Yang Shi <[email protected]> Reported-by: yangge <[email protected]> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <[email protected]> Cc: David Hildenbrand <[email protected]> Cc: Peter Xu <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> [6.6+] Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <[email protected]>

We might run into a SIE validity if gisa has been disabled either via using kernel parameter "kvm.use_gisa=0" or by setting the related sysfs attribute to N (echo N >/sys/module/kvm/parameters/use_gisa). The validity is caused by an invalid value in the SIE control block's gisa designation. That happens because we pass the uninitialized gisa origin to virt_to_phys() before writing it to the gisa designation. To fix this we return 0 in kvm_s390_get_gisa_desc() if the origin is 0. kvm_s390_get_gisa_desc() is used to determine which gisa designation to set in the SIE control block. A value of 0 in the gisa designation disables gisa usage. The issue surfaces in the host kernel with the following kernel message as soon a new kvm guest start is attemted. kvm: unhandled validity intercept 0x1011 WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 781237 at arch/s390/kvm/intercept.c:101 kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x42e/0x4d0 [kvm] Modules linked in: vhost_net tap tun xt_CHECKSUM xt_MASQUERADE xt_conntrack ipt_REJECT xt_tcpudp nft_compat x_tables nf_nat_tftp nf_conntrack_tftp vfio_pci_core irqbypass vhost_vsock vmw_vsock_virtio_transport_common vsock vhost vhost_iotlb kvm nft_fib_inet nft_fib_ipv4 nft_fib_ipv6 nft_fib nft_reject_inet nf_reject_ipv4 nf_reject_ipv6 nft_reject nft_ct nft_chain_nat nf_nat nf_conntrack nf_defrag_ipv6 nf_defrag_ipv4 ip_set nf_tables sunrpc mlx5_ib ib_uverbs ib_core mlx5_core uvdevice s390_trng eadm_sch vfio_ccw zcrypt_cex4 mdev vfio_iommu_type1 vfio sch_fq_codel drm i2c_core loop drm_panel_orientation_quirks configfs nfnetlink lcs ctcm fsm dm_service_time ghash_s390 prng chacha_s390 libchacha aes_s390 des_s390 libdes sha3_512_s390 sha3_256_s390 sha512_s390 sha256_s390 sha1_s390 sha_common dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log zfcp scsi_transport_fc scsi_dh_rdac scsi_dh_emc scsi_dh_alua pkey zcrypt dm_multipath rng_core autofs4 [last unloaded: vfio_pci] CPU: 0 PID: 781237 Comm: CPU 0/KVM Not tainted 6.10.0-08682-gcad9f11498ea #6 Hardware name: IBM 3931 A01 701 (LPAR) Krnl PSW : 0704c00180000000 000003d93deb0122 (kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x432/0x4d0 [kvm]) R:0 T:1 IO:1 EX:1 Key:0 M:1 W:0 P:0 AS:3 CC:0 PM:0 RI:0 EA:3 Krnl GPRS: 000003d900000027 000003d900000023 0000000000000028 000002cd00000000 000002d063a00900 00000359c6daf708 00000000000bebb5 0000000000001eff 000002cfd82e9000 000002cfd80bc000 0000000000001011 000003d93deda412 000003ff8962df98 000003d93de77ce0 000003d93deb011e 00000359c6daf960 Krnl Code: 000003d93deb0112: c020fffe7259 larl %r2,000003d93de7e5c4 000003d93deb0118: c0e53fa8beac brasl %r14,000003d9bd3c7e70 #000003d93deb011e: af000000 mc 0,0 >000003d93deb0122: a728ffea lhi %r2,-22 000003d93deb0126: a7f4fe24 brc 15,000003d93deafd6e 000003d93deb012a: 9101f0b0 tm 176(%r15),1 000003d93deb012e: a774fe48 brc 7,000003d93deafdbe 000003d93deb0132: 40a0f0ae sth %r10,174(%r15) Call Trace: [<000003d93deb0122>] kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x432/0x4d0 [kvm] ([<000003d93deb011e>] kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x42e/0x4d0 [kvm]) [<000003d93deacc10>] vcpu_post_run+0x1d0/0x3b0 [kvm] [<000003d93deaceda>] __vcpu_run+0xea/0x2d0 [kvm] [<000003d93dead9da>] kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl_run+0x16a/0x430 [kvm] [<000003d93de93ee0>] kvm_vcpu_ioctl+0x190/0x7c0 [kvm] [<000003d9bd728b4e>] vfs_ioctl+0x2e/0x70 [<000003d9bd72a092>] __s390x_sys_ioctl+0xc2/0xd0 [<000003d9be0e9222>] __do_syscall+0x1f2/0x2e0 [<000003d9be0f9a90>] system_call+0x70/0x98 Last Breaking-Event-Address: [<000003d9bd3c7f58>] __warn_printk+0xe8/0xf0 Cc: [email protected] Reported-by: Christian Borntraeger <[email protected]> Fixes: fe0ef00 ("KVM: s390: sort out physical vs virtual pointers usage") Signed-off-by: Michael Mueller <[email protected]> Tested-by: Christian Borntraeger <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Janosch Frank <[email protected]> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/[email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Janosch Frank <[email protected]>
When l2tp tunnels use a socket provided by userspace, we can hit lockdep splats like the below when data is transmitted through another (unrelated) userspace socket which then gets routed over l2tp. This issue was previously discussed here: https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/[email protected]/ The solution is to have lockdep treat socket locks of l2tp tunnel sockets separately than those of standard INET sockets. To do so, use a different lockdep subclass where lock nesting is possible. ============================================ WARNING: possible recursive locking detected 6.10.0+ #34 Not tainted -------------------------------------------- iperf3/771 is trying to acquire lock: ffff8881027601d8 (slock-AF_INET/1){+.-.}-{2:2}, at: l2tp_xmit_skb+0x243/0x9d0 but task is already holding lock: ffff888102650d98 (slock-AF_INET/1){+.-.}-{2:2}, at: tcp_v4_rcv+0x1848/0x1e10 other info that might help us debug this: Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 ---- lock(slock-AF_INET/1); lock(slock-AF_INET/1); *** DEADLOCK *** May be due to missing lock nesting notation 10 locks held by iperf3/771: #0: ffff888102650258 (sk_lock-AF_INET){+.+.}-{0:0}, at: tcp_sendmsg+0x1a/0x40 #1: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: __ip_queue_xmit+0x4b/0xbc0 #2: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: ip_finish_output2+0x17a/0x1130 #3: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: process_backlog+0x28b/0x9f0 #4: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: ip_local_deliver_finish+0xf9/0x260 #5: ffff888102650d98 (slock-AF_INET/1){+.-.}-{2:2}, at: tcp_v4_rcv+0x1848/0x1e10 #6: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: __ip_queue_xmit+0x4b/0xbc0 #7: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: ip_finish_output2+0x17a/0x1130 #8: ffffffff822ac1e0 (rcu_read_lock_bh){....}-{1:2}, at: __dev_queue_xmit+0xcc/0x1450 #9: ffff888101f33258 (dev->qdisc_tx_busylock ?: &qdisc_tx_busylock#2){+...}-{2:2}, at: __dev_queue_xmit+0x513/0x1450 stack backtrace: CPU: 2 UID: 0 PID: 771 Comm: iperf3 Not tainted 6.10.0+ #34 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.15.0-1 04/01/2014 Call Trace: <IRQ> dump_stack_lvl+0x69/0xa0 dump_stack+0xc/0x20 __lock_acquire+0x135d/0x2600 ? Currently, migrate_pages_batch() can lock multiple locked folios with an arbitrary order. Although folio_trylock() is used to avoid deadlock as commit 2ef7dbb ("migrate_pages: try migrate in batch asynchronously firstly") mentioned, it seems try_split_folio() is still missing. It was found by compaction stress test when I explicitly enable EROFS compressed files to use large folios, which case I cannot reproduce with the same workload if large folio support is off (current mainline). Typically, filesystem reads (with locked file-backed folios) could use another bdev/meta inode to load some other I/Os (e.g. inode extent metadata or caching compressed data), so the locking order will be: file-backed folios (A) bdev/meta folios (B) The following calltrace shows the deadlock: Thread 1 takes (B) lock and tries to take folio (A) lock Thread 2 takes (A) lock and tries to take folio (B) lock [Thread 1] INFO: task stress:1824 blocked for more than 30 seconds. commit 704d3d6 upstream. Since 45ecaea ("drm/sched: Partial revert of 'drm/sched: Keep s_fence->parent pointer'") still active jobs aren't put back in the pending list on drm_sched_start(), as they don't have a active parent fence anymore, so if the GPU is still working and the timeout is extended, all currently active jobs will be freed. To avoid prematurely freeing jobs that are still active on the GPU, don't block the scheduler until we are fully committed to actually reset the GPU. As the current job is already removed from the pending list and will not be put back when drm_sched_start() isn't called, we must make sure to put the job back on the pending list when extending the timeout. [ Upstream commit 86a41ea ] When l2tp tunnels use a socket provided by userspace, we can hit lockdep splats like the below when data is transmitted through another (unrelated) userspace socket which then gets routed over l2tp. This issue was previously discussed here: https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/[email protected]/ The solution is to have lockdep treat socket locks of l2tp tunnel sockets separately than those of standard INET sockets. To do so, use a different lockdep subclass where lock nesting is possible. ============================================ WARNING: possible recursive locking detected 6.10.0+ #34 Not tainted -------------------------------------------- iperf3/771 is trying to acquire lock: ffff8881027601d8 (slock-AF_INET/1){+.-.}-{2:2}, at: l2tp_xmit_skb+0x243/0x9d0 but task is already holding lock: ffff888102650d98 (slock-AF_INET/1){+.-.}-{2:2}, at: tcp_v4_rcv+0x1848/0x1e10 other info that might help us debug this: Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 ---- lock(slock-AF_INET/1); lock(slock-AF_INET/1); *** DEADLOCK *** May be due to missing lock nesting notation 10 locks held by iperf3/771: #0: ffff888102650258 (sk_lock-AF_INET){+.+.}-{0:0}, at: tcp_sendmsg+0x1a/0x40 #1: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: __ip_queue_xmit+0x4b/0xbc0 #2: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: ip_finish_output2+0x17a/0x1130 #3: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: process_backlog+0x28b/0x9f0 #4: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: ip_local_deliver_finish+0xf9/0x260 #5: ffff888102650d98 (slock-AF_INET/1){+.-.}-{2:2}, at: tcp_v4_rcv+0x1848/0x1e10 #6: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: __ip_queue_xmit+0x4b/0xbc0 #7: ffffffff822ac220 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: ip_finish_output2+0x17a/0x1130 #8: ffffffff822ac1e0 (rcu_read_lock_bh){....}-{1:2}, at: __dev_queue_xmit+0xcc/0x1450 #9: ffff888101f33258 (dev->qdisc_tx_busylock ?: &qdisc_tx_busylock#2){+...}-{2:2}, at: __dev_queue_xmit+0x513/0x1450 stack backtrace: CPU: 2 UID: 0 PID: 771 Comm: iperf3 Not tainted 6.10.0+ #34 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.15.0-1 04/01/2014 Call Trace: <IRQ> dump_stack_lvl+0x69/0xa0 dump_stack+0xc/0x20 __lock_acquire+0x135d/0x2600 ? commit 5a44bb0 upstream. We might run into a SIE validity if gisa has been disabled either via using kernel parameter "kvm.use_gisa=0" or by setting the related sysfs attribute to N (echo N >/sys/module/kvm/parameters/use_gisa). The validity is caused by an invalid value in the SIE control block's gisa designation. That happens because we pass the uninitialized gisa origin to virt_to_phys() before writing it to the gisa designation. To fix this we return 0 in kvm_s390_get_gisa_desc() if the origin is 0. kvm_s390_get_gisa_desc() is used to determine which gisa designation to set in the SIE control block. A value of 0 in the gisa designation disables gisa usage. The issue surfaces in the host kernel with the following kernel message as soon a new kvm guest start is attemted. kvm: unhandled validity intercept 0x1011 WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 781237 at arch/s390/kvm/intercept.c:101 kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x42e/0x4d0 [kvm] Modules linked in: vhost_net tap tun xt_CHECKSUM xt_MASQUERADE xt_conntrack ipt_REJECT xt_tcpudp nft_compat x_tables nf_nat_tftp nf_conntrack_tftp vfio_pci_core irqbypass vhost_vsock vmw_vsock_virtio_transport_common vsock vhost vhost_iotlb kvm nft_fib_inet nft_fib_ipv4 nft_fib_ipv6 nft_fib nft_reject_inet nf_reject_ipv4 nf_reject_ipv6 nft_reject nft_ct nft_chain_nat nf_nat nf_conntrack nf_defrag_ipv6 nf_defrag_ipv4 ip_set nf_tables sunrpc mlx5_ib ib_uverbs ib_core mlx5_core uvdevice s390_trng eadm_sch vfio_ccw zcrypt_cex4 mdev vfio_iommu_type1 vfio sch_fq_codel drm i2c_core loop drm_panel_orientation_quirks configfs nfnetlink lcs ctcm fsm dm_service_time ghash_s390 prng chacha_s390 libchacha aes_s390 des_s390 libdes sha3_512_s390 sha3_256_s390 sha512_s390 sha256_s390 sha1_s390 sha_common dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log zfcp scsi_transport_fc scsi_dh_rdac scsi_dh_emc scsi_dh_alua pkey zcrypt dm_multipath rng_core autofs4 [last unloaded: vfio_pci] CPU: 0 PID: 781237 Comm: CPU 0/KVM Not tainted 6.10.0-08682-gcad9f11498ea #6 Hardware name: IBM 3931 A01 701 (LPAR) Krnl PSW : 0704c00180000000 000003d93deb0122 (kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x432/0x4d0 [kvm]) R:0 T:1 IO:1 EX:1 Key:0 M:1 W:0 P:0 AS:3 CC:0 PM:0 RI:0 EA:3 Krnl GPRS: 000003d900000027 000003d900000023 0000000000000028 000002cd00000000 000002d063a00900 00000359c6daf708 00000000000bebb5 0000000000001eff 000002cfd82e9000 000002cfd80bc000 0000000000001011 000003d93deda412 000003ff8962df98 000003d93de77ce0 000003d93deb011e 00000359c6daf960 Krnl Code: 000003d93deb0112: c020fffe7259 larl %r2,000003d93de7e5c4 000003d93deb0118: c0e53fa8beac brasl %r14,000003d9bd3c7e70 #000003d93deb011e: af000000 mc 0,0 >000003d93deb0122: a728ffea lhi %r2,-22 000003d93deb0126: a7f4fe24 brc 15,000003d93deafd6e 000003d93deb012a: 9101f0b0 tm 176(%r15),1 000003d93deb012e: a774fe48 brc 7,000003d93deafdbe 000003d93deb0132: 40a0f0ae sth %r10,174(%r15) Call Trace: [<000003d93deb0122>] kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x432/0x4d0 [kvm] ([<000003d93deb011e>] kvm_handle_sie_intercept+0x42e/0x4d0 [kvm]) [<000003d93deacc10>] vcpu_post_run+0x1d0/0x3b0 [kvm] [<000003d93deaceda>] __vcpu_run+0xea/0x2d0 [kvm] [<000003d93dead9da>] kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl_run+0x16a/0x430 [kvm] [<000003d93de93ee0>] kvm_vcpu_ioctl+0x190/0x7c0 [kvm] [<000003d9bd728b4e>] vfs_ioctl+0x2e/0x70 [<000003d9bd72a092>] __s390x_sys_ioctl+0xc2/0xd0 [<000003d9be0e9222>] __do_syscall+0x1f2/0x2e0 [<000003d9be0f9a90>] system_call+0x70/0x98 Last Breaking-Event-Address: [<000003d9bd3c7f58>] __warn_printk+0xe8/0xf0 Cc: [email protected] Reported-by: Christian Borntraeger <[email protected]> Fixes: fe0ef00 ("KVM: s390: sort out physical vs virtual pointers usage") Signed-off-by: Michael Mueller <[email protected]> Tested-by: Christian Borntraeger <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Janosch Frank <[email protected]> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/[email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Janosch Frank <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <[email protected]>

Analysing the vmcore, we know that nfs4_copy_state listed by destination nfs_server->ss_copies was added by the field copies in handle_async_copy(), and we found a waiting copy process with the stack as: PID: 3511963 TASK: ffff710028b47e00 CPU: 0 COMMAND: "cp" #0 [ffff8001116ef740] __switch_to at ffff8000081b92f4 #1 [ffff8001116ef760] __schedule at ffff800008dd0650 #2 [ffff8001116ef7c0] schedule at ffff800008dd0a00 #3 [ffff8001116ef7e0] schedule_timeout at ffff800008dd6aa0 #4 [ffff8001116ef860] __wait_for_common at ffff800008dd166c #5 [ffff8001116ef8e0] wait_for_completion_interruptible at ffff800008dd1898 #6 [ffff8001116ef8f0] handle_async_copy at ffff8000055142f4 [nfsv4] #7 [ffff8001116ef970] _nfs42_proc_copy at ffff8000055147c8 [nfsv4] #8 [ffff8001116efa80] nfs42_proc_copy at ffff800005514cf0 [nfsv4] #9 [ffff8001116efc50] __nfs4_copy_file_range.constprop.0 at ffff8000054ed694 [nfsv4] The NULL-pointer dereference was due to nfs42_complete_copies() listed the nfs_server->ss_copies by the field ss_copies of nfs4_copy_state. So the nfs4_copy_state address ffff0100f98fa3f0 was offset by 0x10 and the data accessed through this pointer was also incorrect. Generally, the ordered list nfs4_state_owner->so_states indicate open(O_RDWR) or open(O_WRITE) states are reclaimed firstly by nfs4_reclaim_open_state(). When destination state reclaim is failed with NFS_STATE_RECOVERY_FAILED and copies are not deleted in nfs_server->ss_copies, the source state may be passed to the nfs42_complete_copies() process earlier, resulting in this crash scene finally. To solve this issue, we add a list_head nfs_server->ss_src_copies for a server-to-server copy specially. …ation When testing the XDP_REDIRECT function on the LS1028A platform, we found a very reproducible issue that the Tx frames can no longer be sent out even if XDP_REDIRECT is turned off. Specifically, if there is a lot of traffic on Rx direction, when XDP_REDIRECT is turned on, the console may display some warnings like "timeout for tx ring koverstreet#6 clear", and all redirected frames will be dropped, the detailed log is as follows. root@ls1028ardb:~# ./xdp-bench redirect eno0 eno2 Redirecting from eno0 (ifindex 3; driver fsl_enetc) to eno2 (ifindex 4; driver fsl_enetc) [203.849809] fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring koverstreet#5 clear [204.006051] fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring koverstreet#6 clear [204.161944] fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring koverstreet#7 clear eno0->eno2 1420505 rx/s 1420590 err,drop/s 0 xmit/s xmit eno0->eno2 0 xmit/s 1420590 drop/s 0 drv_err/s 15.71 bulk-avg eno0->eno2 1420484 rx/s 1420485 err,drop/s 0 xmit/s xmit eno0->eno2 0 xmit/s 1420485 drop/s 0 drv_err/s 15.71 bulk-avg By analyzing the XDP_REDIRECT implementation of enetc driver, the driver will reconfigure Tx and Rx BD rings when a bpf program is installed or uninstalled, but there is no mechanisms to block the redirected frames when enetc driver reconfigures rings. Similarly, XDP_TX verdicts on received frames can also lead to frames being enqueued in the Tx rings. Because XDP ignores the state set by the netif_tx_wake_queue() API, so introduce the ENETC_TX_DOWN flag to suppress transmission of XDP frames. The Tx BD rings are disabled first in enetc_stop() and the driver waits for them to become empty. This operation is not safe while the ring is actively transmitting frames, and will cause the ring to not be empty and hardware exception. As described in the NETC block guide, software should only disable an active Tx ring after all pending ring entries have been consumed (i.e. when PI = CI). Disabling a transmit ring that is actively processing BDs risks a HW-SW race hazard whereby a hardware resource becomes assigned to work on one or more ring entries only to have those entries be removed due to the ring becoming disabled. When testing XDP_REDIRECT feautre, although all frames were blocked from being put into Tx rings during ring reconfiguration, the similar warning log was still encountered: fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring koverstreet#6 clear fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring koverstreet#7 clear The reason is that when there are still unsent frames in the Tx ring, disabling the Tx ring causes the remaining frames to be unable to be sent out. And the Tx ring cannot be restored, which means that even if the xdp program is uninstalled, the Tx frames cannot be sent out anymore. Therefore, correct the operation order in enect_start() and enect_stop(). If ufshcd_rtc_work calls ufshcd_rpm_put_sync() and the pm's usage_count is 0, we will enter the runtime suspend callback. However, the runtime suspend callback will wait to flush ufshcd_rtc_work, causing a deadlock. Replace ufshcd_rpm_put_sync() with ufshcd_rpm_put() to avoid the deadlock. [ Upstream commit 05c200c ] The following handshake mechanism needs be followed after firmware download is completed to bring the firmware to running state. After firmware fragments of Operational image are downloaded and secure sends result of the image succeeds, 1. Driver sends HCI Intel reset with boot option koverstreet#1 to switch FW image. 2. FW sends Alive GP[0] MSIx 3. Driver enables data path (doorbell 0x460 for RBDs, etc...) 4. Driver gets Bootup event from firmware 5. Driver performs D0 entry to device (WRITE to IPC_Sleep_Control =0x0) 6. FW sends Alive GP[0] MSIx 7. Device host interface is fully set for BT protocol stack operation. 8. Driver may optionally get debug event with ID 0x97 which can be dropped For Intermediate loadger image, all the above steps are applicable expcept koverstreet#5 and koverstreet#6. On HCI_OP_RESET, firmware raises alive interrupt. Driver needs to wait for it before passing control over to bluetooth stack. Its used from trace__run(), for the 'perf trace' live mode, i.e. its strace-like, non-perf.data file processing mode, the most common one. The trace__run() function will set trace->host using machine__new_host() that is supposed to give a machine instance representing the running machine, and since we'll use perf_env__arch_strerrno() to get the right errno -> string table, we need to use machine->env, so initialize it in machine__new_host(). When the power mode change is successful but the power mode hasn't actually changed, the post notification was missed. Similar to the approach with hibernate/clock scale/hce enable, having pre/post notifications in the same function will make it easier to maintain. Hou Tao says: ==================== This patch set fixes several issues for LPM trie. These issues were found during adding new test cases or were reported by syzbot. The patch set is structured as follows: Patch #1~#2 are clean-ups for lpm_trie_update_elem(). Patch #3 handles BPF_EXIST and BPF_NOEXIST correctly for LPM trie. Patch #4 fixes the accounting of n_entries when doing in-place update. Patch #5 fixes the exact match condition in trie_get_next_key() and it may skip keys when the passed key is not found in the map. Patch #6~#7 switch from kmalloc() to bpf memory allocator for LPM trie to fix several lock order warnings reported by syzbot. It also enables raw_spinlock_t for LPM trie again. After these changes, the LPM trie will be closer to being usable in any context (though the reentrance check of trie->lock is still missing, but it is on my todo list). Patch #8: move test_lpm_map to map_tests to make it run regularly. Patch #9: add test cases for the issues fixed by patch #3~#5. Please see individual patches for more details. Comments are always welcome. Change Log: v3: * patch #2: remove the unnecessary NULL-init for im_node * patch #6: alloc the leaf node before disabling IRQ to low the possibility of -ENOMEM when leaf_size is large; Free these nodes outside the trie lock (Suggested by Alexei) * collect review and ack tags (Thanks for Toke & Daniel) v2: https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/[email protected]/ * collect review tags (Thanks for Toke) * drop "Add bpf_mem_cache_is_mergeable() helper" patch * patch #3~#4: add fix tag * patch #4: rename the helper to trie_check_add_elem() and increase n_entries in it. * patch #6: use one bpf mem allocator and update commit message to clarify that using bpf mem allocator is more appropriate. * patch #7: update commit message to add the possible max running time for update operation. * patch #9: update commit message to specify the purpose of these test cases. v1: https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/[email protected]/ ==================== Link: https://lore.kernel.org/all/[email protected]/ Signed-off-by: Alexei Starovoitov <[email protected]>
Hi.
Is there plans for alternative hashing algorithms, e.g. xxhash, being added to bcachefs? Crc32 is not an option for us due to collisions and dependency on cpu instruction set...
Or, do you have some guidelines for implementing alternative hash algorithms in your FS? Actually, we have something in mind, and afaik, one can face an issue only if crc_combine is used, since most of contemporary hash algorithms do not support such function.
As I understood from docs, you have no support for error correction for now... I am reading about solutions you mentioned. But, I can only hope that Reed-Solomon with it's high cpu demand wont be the only option (I beleive I've seen it's being mentioned somewhere in bugtracker).
