Hybrid A* Path Planner for the KTH Research Concept Vehicle Build Status

This repository contains the implementation of a Hybrid A* Path Planner for autonomous vehicles, specifically developed for the KTH Research Concept Vehicle. The Hybrid A* algorithm is a powerful path planning approach that combines the benefits of A* search in continuous space with a discretized set of headings. It enables the generation of efficient and smooth paths for nonholonomic vehicles navigating complex environments.

Introduction

The code in this repository is the result of my master's thesis which I have written at the Integrated Research Lab (ITRL) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (2016). The code is documented here and the associated thesis can be found here.

The goal of the thesis and hence this code is to create a real-time path planning algorithm for the nonholonomic Research Concept Vehicle (RCV). The algorithm uses a binary obstacle map as an input, generated using LIDAR mounted on top of the vehicle. The algorithm is being developed using C++ due to real-time requirements in combination with ROS to ensure modularity and portability as well as using RViz as a visualization/simulation environment.

  • Sampling in continuous space with 72 different headings per cell (5° discretization)
  • Constrained Heuristic - nonholonomic without obstacles
  • Unconstrained Heuristic - holonomic with obstacles

  • C++ real-time implementation (~10 Hz)

Large parts of the implementation are closely related to the hybrid A* algorithm developed by Dmitri Dolgov and Sebastian Thrun (Path Planning for Autonomous Vehicles in Unknown Semi-structured Environments DOI: 10.1177/0278364909359210)

Visualization (Rviz)

  1. Add -> By Topic -> /map, /path, /pathVehicle, (/visualizeNode2DPoses)
  2. Click 2D Pose Estimate to set a start point on the map (p)
  3. Click 2D Nav Goal to set a goal point on the map (g)
  4. Wait for the path being searched! (this process can be visualized [optional])

In addition, the resulting algorithm needs to be wrapped in a way that it can be deployed easily and interfaced with di erent other systems on the research vehicle. Thus the thesis also tries to gives insights into ways of achieving realtime capabilities necessary for experimental testing as well as on how to setup a visualization environment for simulation and debugging.}
