Test failure in TestBundleIntegerArrayList2 when the shared runtime is enabled #4596

I've got a better reproduction for this and it's also affecting d16-6. You can hit this by installing and running https://github.com/xamarin/monodroid-samples/tree/master/android5.0/DrawableTinting on device in Debug mode. Fixes: dotnet#4596 Context: 7117414 7117414 made string lookup return into our type map support, for Debug builds only, and with them the old problem of duplicate type names returned as well - it is possible that a single Java type name will map to a number of managed types and vice versa. Namely, it uses Mono embedding API to return a `MonoType` instance corresponding to the managed type name, then that `MonoType` instance is converted into `MonoReflectionType*` which is returned to the managed code (it corresponds to the `System.Type` instance there) and then an attempt to instantiate this type is made in the usual way. It works for non-generic types, but whenever a generic type is processed in this way it will result in us returning a `MonoReflectionType*` corresponding to an **open** generic type which then results in the exception shown above. Given just the type name, the native runtime is unable to "close" the generic type without information regarding the types of the generic parameters needed to do it. The solution, a workaround really, for now is to look at the type name and return `null` to the managed code whenever we see that the type name contains the "`" character, marking it as a generic type. The managed code will then proceed to look up the type and instantiate it in the correct way. In the future we need to find a better solution for this issue, but doing so would require quite extensive changes to our current code. The solution implemented here is sufficient for now.

This will cause the runtime code to fail to find a mapping, thus allowing the managed code to deal with such a type properly. ~~ Test Updates ~~ Update `BundleTest.TestBundleIntegerArrayList2()` so that it asserts the runtime *type* of `obj` returned, asserting that it is in fact a `JavaList` and not e.g. `Java.Util.ArrayList` or something. (The linker could otherwise "change" things, and this assertion will ensure that `JavaList` won't be linked away…) Add a unit test for the Release config app bug in Issue #4660; thanks to @brendanzagaeski. It works by provoking the binary search bug by "ensuring" that a *generic* type comes *before* the "normally preferred" *non*-generic type. @grendello I'm seeing a new startup crash with the DrawableTinting test case with this patch applied to d16-6: https://gist.github.com/pjcollins/87762e81f1f3c7e8b821356e4612eecf I'm worried about other potential fallout/risk on d16-6 with changes coming this late (unfortunately in part due to detection of this issue coming late in the cycle). Do we have a sane way to revert to d16-5 behavior here for the shorter time frame and look to address this more properly in d16-7 or d16-8? I understand this would carry a performance hit but I think it would be preferable to limit the scope of change in d16-6 at this point if possible. |

Release status update A Preview version of Xamarin.Android has now been published on macOS that includes the fix for this item. The fix is not yet available on Windows. I will update this item again when a version with the fix is available on Windows. Fix included in Xamarin.Android 10.3.1.0. Fix included on macOS in Visual Studio 2019 for Mac version 8.6 Preview 6. To try the Preview version that includes the fix, check for the latest updates on the Preview updater channel. Fix not yet available on Windows. |
