Emulators

What emulator should I use ?

You may have noticed that, on the file select screen, a little console is floating, along with a two-line name. This is actually some emulator detection !

If the game displays CONSOLE:, then the emulator is good enough that is can't be differentiated from an actual GBC/GBA. (Except CONSOLE: 3DS. This one sucks.)

If the game detected the emulator as such, then it will differentiate crappy ones from decent ones. We do NOT recommend playing the game on a crappy emulator, but won't forbid you. You can also play the game on a DECENT emulator, but keep in mind that it may be prone to emulation issues.

With that said, below is our selection of emulators for different platforms. These are the emulators we use to play (and sometimes fix) the game, and we strongly recommend using one of them. We aren't paid to advertise them, they are just good emulators.

Windows

  • SameBoy has a nice GUI, is extremely accurate (at the time of writing this, it's the only emulator that Aevilia doesn't detect), and generally works very well. Perhaps its main downside is its CPU usage.
  • BGB has a somewhat unintuitive GUI, but has extremely good accuracy and a powerful debugging interface, perfect if you want to analyze or mod the game.
  • BizHawk is a multiplatform emulator (similar to RetroArch) that has a slightly better GUI than BGB, and uses Gambatte (below) as its Game Boy emulation core.
  • Gambatte's accuracy is on par with BGB's, and available to be built from source for Windows.

Do NOT use VBA. You'll even get a message telling you that the emulator sucks every time the game starts. This includes non-stock strains of VBA, including VBA-RR and VBA-M.

Linux (and Mac)

  • SameBoy runs natively on Linux (via SDL) and MacOS (via Cocoa).
  • BGB runs quite well on Wine.
  • Gambatte can also be built from source for these systems.

Android

  • GBC.EMU is based on Gambatte, by it's a paid app.
  • Pizza Boy is a free, very accurate and actively developed emulator. There's an enhanced paid version, too.

iOS

  • If you have Cydia, then you can install GBC.EMU as well.
  • Apple forbids emulators from being on the App Store, so if you haven't gone through the jailbreak process, you can't play this game on iOS.

Cross-platform

  • RetroArch is a cross-platform emulator that runs on... pretty much EVERYTHING. It uses a modular-emulation system, so you can use Sameboy or Gamebatte on nearly any system.
