feat: benchmark tx size with fee #5414

This PR adds new benchmarks to compare tx size with different fee payment methods.

The tx type chosen for this benchmark is a simple private transfer: token_contract.transfer(alice, bob, 1n, 0) . This is expected to (1) nullify one of Alice's note (2) create a note for Bob with the amount and (3) create a note for Alice with the left over from the nullified note. On top of this base we add the costs of paying the fee in public/private

Metrics with a significant change:

  • circuit_simulation_time_in_ms (base-parity): 3,938 (-16%)
  • circuit_simulation_time_in_ms (root-parity): 1,374 (-17%)
  • circuit_simulation_time_in_ms (private-kernel-inner): 450 (+46%)
  • circuit_simulation_time_in_ms (public-kernel-app-logic): 258 (+105%)
  • tx_sequencer_processing_time_ms (1): 926 (+26%)
  • tx_size_in_bytes (0): 18,451 (+23%)
  • l2_block_public_tx_process_time_in_ms (8): 7,564 (+26%)
  • l2_block_public_tx_process_time_in_ms (32): 30,014 (+27%)
  • l2_block_public_tx_process_time_in_ms (64): 59,833 (+28%)
  • note_trial_decrypting_time_in_ms (64): 116 (+214%)
Detailed results

All benchmarks are run on txs on the Benchmarking contract on the repository. Each tx consists of a batch call to create_note and increment_balance, which guarantees that each tx has a private call, a nested private call, a public call, and a nested public call, as well as an emitted private note, an unencrypted log, and public storage read and write.

This benchmark source data is available in JSON format on S3 here.

Values are compared against data from master at commit 8c4e5760 and shown if the difference exceeds 1%.

It's a weak assumption. I think it's ok for benchmarking right now, but will have to be changed later. WDYT?

I agree. Fine for now, but we probably want some clarity, first for ourselves, then for other sequencers on how to interpret what is going on in setup and teardown.
