Post filtering: Legacy client

Intro

Post filtering has to do with narrowing down the number of posts displayed based on certain parameters (the parameters in these case are: surveys, categories, sources, location etc. - a comprehensive guide on these post filter parameters has been added below). The following must exist before this feature (or some parts of this feature) can exist or be completed:

• Filters:
  • Survey: Surveys must exist for filter by survey to exist or be completed - see [Surveys and posts: Legacy client](https://www.notion.so/Surveys-and-posts-Legacy-client-261d186fe34e45b9ad76eb4bf0e42c46) document for more info.
  • Saved searches: Saved searches feature must exist for filter by saved searches to exist or be completed - see [Saved searches: Legacy client](https://www.notion.so/Saved-Searches-Legacy-client-58399c66df2f4bd189a2dfd352a7e642) document for more info.

UI elements, workings & interactions

1. Post filters applied (this is common to all types of filters) and [post cards/display](https://www.notion.so/Posts-postcards-post-metadata-post-action-dropdown-buttons-post-band-2330e798ec1a4df3b58ec0d4b54671df):
   1. Points, post cards and the map area of the map view:
      • Posts with location information: The map area of the map view zooms in and out accordingly to show all points on the map for posts (from various surveys) that have location information, and that matches the filter(s) or filters combination applied.
      • Posts without location information: No points on map for these, as stated in the [map view quick tour doc page](https://www.notion.so/Map-view-b3a506dcad04419f9449d8d3af8e2edf).
   2. [“unmapped” info](https://www.notion.so/Map-view-b3a506dcad04419f9449d8d3af8e2edf): Unmapped info is also affected by whatever happens through filtering - the number of posts with no location information changes accordingly, based on the filter(s) or filters combination applied.
   3. Post cards and the data view left: Post cards that match the filter(s) or filters combination applied are displayed in the data view.
2.    1. Specific to filter by survey:
      • User can filter by survey by clicking on any of these:
        • Survey filter (the body or the checkbox on the left)
        • Checkboxes in the (filter by) survey section of the post toolbar dropdown
      • Checking or unchecking the checkbox in (filter by) survey section of the post toolbar checks or unchecks the checkbox in the survey filters accordingly - and vice-versa.
      • The colour of a survey filter grows dim when checkbox (survey filter and filter by survey section of post toolbar) is not checked.
   2. Common to all types of filters:
      • Survey filters: The number displayed on the button found on the survey filter changes accordingly to show the number of posts from that survey, that matches the filter(s) or filters combination applied.
3. Post toolbar dropdown filter sections and the [data sources survey/post filters](https://www.notion.so/Map-view-b3a506dcad04419f9449d8d3af8e2edf) area of the mode context form filter:
   1. Specific to filter by source:
      • User can filter by source by clicking on any of these:
        • data sources survey/post filters (the body or the checkbox on the left)
        • Checkboxes in the (filter by) source section of the post toolbar dropdown
      • Checking or unchecking the checkbox in (filter by) source section of the post toolbar checks or unchecks the checkbox in the data sources survey/post filters accordingly - and vice-versa.

4. Filter checkboxes and the [sort & filter button](https://www.notion.so/Post-toolbar-toolbar-367c2597630446e0adbb36e961d40986) number:
   1. Default filter settings (when no filter is applied):
      1. Filter checkboxes:
         • Filter by status: By default i.e. when no filter is applied, only published and under review checkboxes are checked.
         • Other types of filters (that use checkboxes): By default i.e. when no filter is applied, all checkboxes under each of the filter types are checked.
           Note that “other types of filters” here mean filter by survey (both in drop down and mode context form filter), filter by datasources (both in drop down and mode context form filter), filter by saved searches and categories.
      2. sort & filter button number:
         • The number on the sort & filter button is zero (0) when no filter has been applied yet (or when sorting has not changed from default).
   2. When filter is applied: (Filter checkboxes and the sort & filter button number). The number on the sort & filter button increases (or decreases accordingly) when at least one of the checkboxes has changed under a type of filter or when sorting changes from default.
5. Status section of the Post toolbar dropdown: User can filter by status by clicking on the checkboxes in the (filter by) status section of the post toolbar dropdown.
6. Saved searches section of the Post toolbar dropdown: User can filter by saved searches through the dropdown in the (filter by) saved searches section of the post toolbar dropdown.
7. Categories section of the Post toolbar dropdown: User can filter by categories by clicking on the checkboxes in the (filter by) categories section of the post toolbar dropdown.
8. Date range section of the Post toolbar dropdown: User can filter by date range by entering start date and end date in the input fields under the (filter by) date range section of the post toolbar dropdown.
9. Location section of the Post toolbar dropdown: User can filter by location using the location input field and the dropdown for distance - [suggestion available](https://www.notion.so/Post-filtering-Legacy-client-647b354cdd764687be9ad9c436d124e2).
10. The “sort by” section in the post toolbar dropdown:
    • Date: (dropdown) for sorting posts by post date, post updated and post created. The default is date created.
    • Newest first and oldest first (radio buttons). Newest first is selected by default.
    • Unlocked posts on top (checkbox): related to [post locking](https://www.notion.so/Post-Locking-Legacy-client-3a570f74dbfb49e4bcf674769b2346dd). check box is checked by default.

Other useful info

• Filters applied by users should be retained on page reload (but reset on login or logout) - Fix: Filters are reset when the page is reloaded  #1820

Bugs and things we are not sure how they should work

• Bugs (for engineers)
  • Unlocked posts on top (checkbox) is not working as expected -see [post locking](https://www.notion.so/Post-Locking-Legacy-client-3a570f74dbfb49e4bcf674769b2346dd) doc to understand locked or unlocked posts and how to identify them.
• Things we are not sure how they should work (for UX designers)
  • All filter types: Unchecking all checkboxes under any type of filter behaves same as default filter settings, therefore post display is the same for both instances. Should it work like this? How can this be improved? - see list numbers 1 and 4 under [UI elements (workings & interactions) section](https://www.notion.so/Post-filtering-Legacy-client-647b354cdd764687be9ad9c436d124e2) above as this relates to post display and default filter settings.
  • Post display and filter by categories: Based on slack thread https://ushahidi.slack.com/archives/CFC4WQG4V/p1662386786417019.
    • How should filter by categories work when all checkboxes under filter by category are checked?
    • Also, how should filter by categories work when all checkboxes under filter by category are unchecked?
  • Post display and filter by status: Based on fix made for filter by status ( Fix: Post list display only published posts by default when no status is specified #1824) and slack thread - https://ushahidi.slack.com/archives/CFC4WQG4V/p1662969727946209.     • How should filter by status work when all checkboxes under filter by category are unchecked?

Suggested changes

• Filter by location section of the post toolbar dropdown:
  • For filter by location, what if there is a list of locations that are currently been used in the deployment that the user can easily pick from? Or, maybe this is probably better: as the user types a location they have in mind unto the input field, a dropdown is displayed below to show a list of the locations specifically currently in use in the deployment (the user can decide to finish typing or just choose from the list). If the location typed does not match any locations currently in use in the deployment, then the dropdown should display a befitting message. What do you think about this?
  • In the dropdown of the above-described filter by location, there could be an option for “show all posts with location information” (and probably for posts without location information too).
