Ahoy! I’m Matthew Rothenberg, but most folks refer to me as my userid mroth. I’m an independent artist who uses technology, as well as an active open source software developer. My passions are pushing for “humane” tech (and tech companies), enabling remote/decentralized teams, and optimizing for developer productivity.

Emojitracker 💫

Emojitracker.com has been running since July 2013, in which time it has tracked over 35 Billion tweets. I've spent years developing and tuning the various open-source software that powers Emojitracker to be very efficient, but the sheer vast volume of data Emojitracker processes means that it still requires some beefy servers to run.

Emojitracker has been written about by The New Yorker, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Spiegel, Le Monde, Wired, Slate, Vice, Hyperallergic, Details Magazine, Complex, The Verge, and many others. It has been exhibited at the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center in New York City and the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy.

Emojitracker is now supported by Emojipedia, and is no longer a part of my GitHub Sponsors tiers.

Developer Tooling 🔧

I develop and maintain a variety of tools for developer productivity and devops. Lots of teams use these tools -- perhaps yours does to? Your support will help me to dedicate time to the ongoing maintenance and support of that tools

Some sample projects:

Developer Tools

  • 🔢 scmpuff: Adds numbered shortcuts to common git commands in your shell.
  • 🗑️ deepclean: Scan and remove junk files from your source code directories.
  • 🐏 ramdisk: Convenience wrapper for cross-platform management of RAM disks.
  • 🤔 consider: Quickly check code comments for subtle (racism|sexism|ableism).

DevOps Tools

  • 🌻 bump: CLI tool to help draft a GitHub Release for the next semantic version.
  • 👯 slacknimate: animated, persistent status updates in Slack. Also usable for mayhem.

More listed coming here soon!

@mroth

My initial goal is to get to the point where Emojitracker is financially neutral for me to operate (e.g. costs only my freely-provided time, rather than actively taking money out of my pocket every month). Emojitracker has been running since July 2013, in which time it has tracked over 30 Billion tweets. I've spent years developing and tuning the various open-source software that powers Emojitracker to be very, very efficient, but the sheer vast volume of data Emojitracker processes means that it still requires some beefy servers to run. Thanks for supporting independent web projects!
