Android: Broken registration to matrix.org - Account created, password login or account recovery does not

Description

We tried to register a new user account to matrix.org home server using the FluffyChat Android client.
After entering the username, password, email address and pressing the registration button; the registration process seemed to start fine:

• we were seeing a loading bar
• received an email about account activation
• used task switch to jump to the email
• clicked the activation URL
• Web page told us that activation was successful
• Task switched back to FluffyChat
• The progress bar simply kept going on and on.

After 5 minutes we aborted the process and tried:

• Login with password: didn't work
• Password reset: No account with given email (we got the activation email anyway)
• Register again: Couldn't register as the account existed

This is either a one time quirk or something worse, but after this we used the same FluffyChat client to register a new account on a home server that only required the reCaptcha check and that process wen't well.
