"Missing messages in history" bug

If you try and jump backwards really far in history (eg clicking a quote) and it takes "too long" to load, that seems to do weird things to your chat history. Basically just dumps some old conversation as the "latest" and not sure where the "current" conversation goes. I think this might be the source of all those "missing message" bugs that people keep finding, but that's kinda hard to trigger arbitrarily. Easiest to find on matrix.org because it's slow. Hopefully that's enough info for some kinda of debugging ideas?
