this repository is kinda painful to clone on low bandwidth connections

in fact git clone consistently times out/cancels for me, maybe not all the test data needs to live in the main repository?
i am currently downloading the zip that github provides and am already at 60 megabytes.

yeah total zipfile size of a snapshot of the master branch is 136MB, 415MB uncompressed, 414MB of it being test-data.
git is not mad to handle half a gigabyte of data and that is without history.
