This makes the data model and the view much simpler, going from a three dimensional object to only two dimensional, making it simpler to visualize and work with.
Also, group is simpler to pronounce than species (/ˈspiːʃɪz/? /ˈspiːʃiːz/? /ˈspiːsɪz/? /ˈspiːsiːz/? /ˈspiːʃɪiːz/?)
Still not sure Group is the best name for data sets, but let's call them that for now.
The mot important question is how to make adding groups most intuitive for the user. A sticky button at the top of the screen? A button under the efforts of the last group (this will not always be visible, but a sticky button is). And what should the button read? "Add group"? Or simply "+"? I like "Add group".
There is also the question of how a group is named by the user. I suggest that the keyboard automatically pops up when she pushes the "Add group" button, and that when the name is typed in, focus is shifted to the first effort-window (where the user types in Catch in effort 1). The name of the Group is now a header above the effort-window (I suspect some of my fellow developers cringe when I call this a "window"). Changing the name of a group must always be possible, so this header must remain an active text-field.
Species should no longer be a part of elfish.
