pip install -e django-select2/ throw errors if .git folder is removed.

Describe the bug
setuptools-scm was unable to detect version for /portal/django-select2. if .git folder is removed then try to install it.

Thank you for reaching out. Might I ask where your copy of this package is comping from?
It looks to me, you got the code from an unsupported location or downloaded the ZIP from GitHub? The error message should does provide a lot of context about this issue:

Make sure you're either building from a fully intact git repository or PyPI tarballs. Most other sources (such as GitHub's tarballs, a git checkout without the .git folder) don't contain the necessary metadata and will not work.

I've used git clone and then removed the .git. Either way using git clone or download as zip the end goal is to remove the .git folder which both did. But then after that when I tried to install the package using pip install -e django-select2/ it gives me the errors as above.

I CAN install the package if the .git is there, if I removed .git or downloaded as zip and installed from there, it failed with the same error

Well, have you considered just leaving it? You can remove the folder after installation. You can also download the source distribution from PyPi, it'll contain a django_select2/_version.py file. That file is created when a distribution is created. However, it is not part of the repot itself.

we have to remove it in order for the package code included in our repo. And we want to install from the local packages not through PyPi.

You will need to manually add a django_select2/_version.py file then. With the file there, the code will install without .git present. Don't forget to include a copy of the license ;)
