GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECVs)

GCOS is asking for feedback on revising its list of so-called "essential climate variables". The descriptions of the variables is in some cases not very clear. Perhaps we should suggest that they include the CV standard_names for these variables with our added "descriptions", which are often helpful in this regard. You can provide input to the GCOS ECVs as requested in their email:

GCOS is currently reviewing the list of GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) and asking for feedback from our community.

A spreadsheet with all the proposed changes to the ECVs has been created and made available on our Drive for you to comment on in the columns G to L. Please note: in order to (hopefully) simplify the feedback, there is a column with "Suggested Action" with the options ACCEPT, AMEND or REJECT. These are intended to refer to the proposed change, i.e. by commenting "REJECT" you are expressing your intention to reject the proposed change, not the individual quantity. There is also the option to add more detailed comments next to the proposed changes, where you can elaborate on your suggestion. If you see that your suggested action has already been selected, simply leave your extended comment next to it.

Further guidance on how to submit feedback can also be found in the instructions document provided by GCOS.

We kindly ask you all to review this and submit your comments by 18 December 2024. This will help us to streamline and collate feedback before the holiday season begins.
