I'd propose having a bash builtin setup command and configuration similar to git. Ideally, a .assetman directory with relevant outputs, manifests, etc.
Configuration can be done then through commandline (as in after package install) suchas assetman --output-dir=PATH , or by editing the file directly.
This would make per-application configuration a breeze.
