General business

Present in the meeting: @infinisil @tomberek @lheckemann @edolstra @kevincox

  • Steering committee rotation, no nominations yet for new members in https://discourse.nixos.org/t/rfc-steering-committee-rotation-2023-24/36197

    • @infinisil: Should this be a paid position? It's just laborious work

      • @edolstra: Yeah, but then also e.g. the NixOS release managers should be paid, much more laborious
      • Could open an issue for a funding request on the foundation issue board
    • @tomberek; Indicate that if people want the process working, we need people to do it

    • @lheckemann: Lots of busy work, could automate more, get funding to automate more?

    • @infinisil: Shrink the steering committee to just 3 people? Need 2 for the meeting

      • Some nods
      • Picking shepherds is delegating the authority of saying when a change is okay. Is that still trusted with fewer people?
    • @edolstra: Picking the shepherds can't be automated

      • @infinisil: But also never really been a controversial topic
      • Automate even that?
    • @tomberek: What can we do to improve the process?

    • Reach out more on other channels, discourse ping, marketing team, twitter, mastodon

    • Nominate people ourselves

    • @infinisil pinged the discourse thread: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/rfc-steering-committee-rotation-2023-24/36197/2?u=infinisil

    • @tomberek will reach out to the marketing team to advertise this more

  • @infinisil will ping a Discourse admin to delete the Discourse group for the steering committee: https://discourse.nixos.org/g/rfc-steering

    • It's outdated and not needed anymore, now that the RFC announcements category is open for anybody to post in
  • Ideas regarding RFC funding:

    • Fund steering committee
    • Fund a notar for meetings
    • Fund somebody to organise meetings, leader
